My experience

I have been a loyal Taxslayer customer since 2003. It was recommended to me by a Tax VP at a company I used to work for. I thought if he recommended it, it must be ok, right?

I was in my early twenties and just getting started doing taxes on my own. Back then, the website wasn't as clean and crisp as it is now. But the functionality was there right from the start. I was amazed then how easy it was for someone who knew little or nothing about income tax returns to quickly file electronically. Granted, my taxes were not particularly complicated then. But as the years have passed I have used and increasing amount of the functions and have had no problems whatsoever.

• Itemize your deductions - The deduction wizard is really easy to use and I highly recommend Taxslayer for this reason.
• Get excellent customer support.  I have used this a couple of times and I was pleasantly suprised by the propmt service.
• Get valuable error checking

For another $5.00, you additionally can:

• Get a more advanced deduction finder
• Receive audit assistance
• Get priority support

I have found the $9.95 option to be more than adequate for my purposes. In fact, I don't believe the price has increased since the first year I started using the service.  That being said, I do not have overly complicated tax returns.  My big items are typically mortgage interest, property taxes paid, and investment income, which is all pretty basic.

This is not to say that Taxslayer can't handle a return for someone with complicated taxes, but I honestly can't speak to that.

I actually had to go back once and find a prior year return. It made me realize how valuable doing taxes online is. I was so relieved that the link was out there for previous years.  It was definitely better than digging through a box in my basement!
